“O Lord God, you have called Your servants,
to ventures of which we cannot see the ending,
by paths as yet untrodden, through perils unknown.
Give us faith to go out with good courage,
not knowing where we go, but only that your hand is leading us,
and your love supporting us; through Jesus Christ Our Lord. Amen.”
God has a plan for you, and you may not know what it is – and that’s okay! Before my senior year of college, I worked full time on campus in the computer center. I joined the summer choir on campus, mostly for something to do and to be with my friends, and I took weekly voice lessons to prepare for an audition for the a capella choir in the fall. I had always been more of a “band person,” but God was definitely preparing me for something else. That summer at Concordia sparked a passion for singing and directing choral music. The summer choir prepared a composition by Dr. Carl Schalk, based upon the words above and sang it during an evening worship service. As I reflected on the words and music, I felt called to something, but I didn’t know what that something might be. Throughout my adult life, I have been called by God to serve Him in different places and different ways. Many times, I have wondered where I was headed or why, but God has always held my hand and loved me. I love teaching, administrating, and music, especially choral music. Over the years, God has led me to be a part of different musical groups, from teaching early childhood students “I am Jesus’ Little Lamb” to performing Handel’s Messiah. The Bible tells us, “The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps” Proverbs 16:9 (ESV). God calls each of our CPS teachers and students to serve Him, using the gifts He has given to them. I hope that the prayer above will be a comfort and inspiration to members of the CPS Community, especially our students. God’s love continues and never fails, and His ways are best. “Give us faith to go out with good courage; through Jesus Christ Our Lord.”
