It is a time for love! Happy Valentine’s Day–a day to celebrate love in our world by passing out candy, flowers, and valentines to show our appreciation and love for each other. Cupid flies around with his arrows spreading the love. The history of Valentine’s Day in the early church is focused on sacrifice. The early church used Valentine’s day as a day to recognize three martyrs by the named of Valentine. The love we receive on Valentine’s day is a small glimpse of the love God has for us. Love is not just a feeling, it’s a commitment and above all a sacrifice.
It is a time to reflect! Sacrifice is a common theme in love.Today starts the season of Lent as the Church looks forward to the ultimate definition of love and sacrifice. Ash Wednesday is a day of reflection for the Church as we recognize as humans we fail and fall short of the glory of God. (Romans 3:23). Ash Wednesday is also the beginning of a great journey headed toward the cross. This journey, the season of Lent, is about the perfect sacrifice. Jesus Christ sacrificed himself on the cross for us all, but even more importantly we look forward to celebrating the resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Easter morning. May today’s reflection remind us how much we need a Savior as we begin a journey headed to the cross and tomb. Thanks be to God he loved us so much He was our ultimate sacrifice.
