Michael Murtha Named Varsity Baseball Coach
In 2018, Michael Murtha enters his second year at Concordia Preparatory School and first as Head Baseball Coach. As a first-year assistant coach with the Saints last year, the team finished 9-8 and qualified for the MIAA “C” Conference playoffs with a team made up largely of underclassmen. The coaching continuity he brings to the program will be an advantage to the team as they strive to capture their first MIAA Baseball Championship since 2009.
Michael attended Loyola Blakefield High School where he was a three-year Varsity player. In his Junior season, Loyola advanced to the MSA “A” Conference Championship, eventually losing the best of 3 series. After graduating from Loyola, Michael attended Elizabethtown College (PA) where he was a two-year Varsity player. During his Sophomore season, the team advanced to the Middle Atlantic Conference Championship. After his Sophomore season, he turned his attention to coaching, securing his first position as a student assistant with the Women’s Varsity Softball Team. As an assistant coach of softball, his team advanced to the Division 3 National Championship Tournament for the first time in school history.
He brings with him a wealth of coaching experience at the Youth and Club levels having coached baseball, soccer, lacrosse, and basketball. He was also the soccer Program Coordinator for Our Lady of Victory School in the Archdiocese of Baltimore Soccer League. This youth league experience has taught him the importance of teaching proper fundamentals at all levels.
In addition to his playing and coaching experience, Michael has been employed by the Baltimore Orioles for over 15 years, most recently working with Orioles’ Productions. One of his main responsibilities with the Orioles’ has been to determine and chart pitches for both the home team and visiting team. As a lifelong student of the game with a coaching style based on teaching fundamentals and working hard, he looks forward to building a winning tradition and a strong baseball program at Concordia Preparatory School.
