Congratulations to sophomore Janiya Forman on her selection into the Entrepreneurship Challenge, hosted by the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). Janiya was nominated by Art Teacher, Mrs. Marcie Barth: “Her natural talent for developing unique concepts and love of investing her creative self into all of her work is inspiring. She willingly volunteers to spend her time helping with art related projects and events.”
For Janiya’s project, she created a business plan to become a commercial artist, selling her own artwork and paintings. Janiya had to present her business plan to a group of judges. Based upon her presentation, two judges elected to become investors granting her $5,000 to start her business. One of the investors will also mentor her through the process. In the weeks ahead, she will purchase the supplies, create a website and social media campaign to promote her business, and begin to operator as an entrepreneur. Janiya expects to work throughout high school creating and building her commercial art business.
All of the nominees attended a reception in Baltimore’s City Hall in late August with Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh and other city leaders. The NFTE encourages the entrepreneurial mindset in young people, preparing them to be career-ready and tomorrow’s innovators.
